Healthy cholesterol range in normal human ranges from 160 mg/dL to 200 mg/dL. This is the total cholesterol number, which includes LDL, HDL and triglycerides. HDL count by itself is as important as the total cholesterol count. The higher your HDL level, the better.

Even if you feel healthy, you should have your blood profile checked regularly. It is recommended by the American Heart Association (AHA) that a test be done every five years for anybody aged 20 or older. Even if you're younger than 20, your doctor may still recommend testing, if you are obese or have other risk factors.

Main factors that can cause unhealthy cholesterol levels include obesity, smoking and excessive alcohol intake. Other than that, lack of physical exercise, certain genetic diseases, hormonal imbalance and glandular system problem are also additional factors, although they are less common.

To stay in the healthy cholesterol range, a diet that is very low in saturated fat is recommended. Only 7% (maximum) of your daily calories should come from saturated fats. This include egg yolks, cheese, beef, pork and poultry. Trans-fats, which are partially hydrogenated unsaturated fat, should also be avoided. Total fat consumption plays more important role in blood serum levels than the intake of cholesterol itself. What type of fat you consume is also important.

Foods that come from plants, such as nuts and flax seeds, all contain phytosterols, a substance that is similar to cholesterol. This is the plant "fat". As most nutriniotist know, fat is very important for humans, and they generally recommend 25% to 30% of our total daily food should come from fat. However, to prevent your cholesterol going up from consuming animal fat, it's much better for you to consume the plant fat instead.

The healthy HDL range in a person should be 60 mg/dL or higher. According to AHA, higher HDL in your bloodstream provide come protection against heart disease, since HDL picks up LDL particles in your blood and carries them back to the liver. This process prevents the particles from forming hard plaques in your arterial walls.

LDL range, on the other hand, should be lower than 100 mg/dL in a healthy person. A higher LDL value of more than 190 is considered high risk for heart disease and stroke. In very abnormal cases where a person's total cholesterol level is lower than 200 mg/dL but his LDL is 190, his condition is still considered as high risk

If your total cholesterol level is below 160 mg/dL, it is usually considered low, and probably caused by nutritional deficiency or underlying disease. It is always good to keep in mind that even in the world of cholesterols, balance is key. This balanc can be achieved by always consuming foods that are both rich in antioxidants and nutritious as well.

By consuming more foods coming from plants, such as whole grains, vegetable and fruits, you can get and maintain healthy cholesterol range. This is the least you can do to your heart.
